Hi Jenny: Interestingly, two of the earlier Vicars of Bovey Tracey, near
Chudleigh were father and son DOMMETTs; Philobeth D. (Vicar from 1734-1785);
and Joseph D. (from 1786). Both were giants in stature and Joseph was a
wrestler of note. There is an incredible incident, recorded in Lance
Tregonning's "Bovey Tracey, An Ancient Town" (see GENUKI), of Joseph who as
head of a group of special constables, wrestling on Bovey Bridge, a giant
called NORTHWAY, who was leader of a gang of rioters in disturbances after
the Napoleonic Wars. Hope this is interesting, Mike.
