A date might help ! In the middle part of the 19th Century the Steam
Basin was built at Keyham by the Admiralty. I suspect that this
might be described as "works" by some - as in shorthand for the "new
works," or whatever ? Somewhat later ISTR the new RN Engineering
College was also built there....
