Subject: Devon Pre-1841 Census Transcription Project
Date: Mon, 3 May 2004 16:28:49 +0100
Hi:
Before I went away for a week I sent out a further request for
volunteers - perhaps all of you who are planning to reply are
awaiting my return! :-)
A number of these precious and rare censuses are already being
transcribed for GENUKI/Devon - the details are at:
http://www.cs.ncl.ac.uk/genuki/DEV/DevonMisc/Pre-1841Census.html
However, the most urgent need is for volunteers who, perhaps during
an already-planned visit to the Exeter, Barnstaple or Plymouth Record
Offices, can check their Census card indexes against the listing of
pre-1841 census on the above page, providing any missing Record
Office reference numbers, and identifying any further extant pre-1841
census listings. This should be an easy task, and not take very long,
but the sooner it is done the better, since it will greatly help the
organisation of this (relatively modest) transcription project.
The other point I should make is that actual transcribing can be done
from easily and cheaply obtained photocopies, so distance from Devon
is no bar to becoming a volunteer transcriber.
Are you one of the many people who have received valuable help from
DEVON-L and GENUKI/Devon and have (I hope) been wondering how you can
best repay it - this is YOUR chance!
(Putting it another way, consider how things would be if no-one
offered help, and EVERYONE merely contented themselves with *asking*
questions.)
I eagerly await responses.
cheers
Brian Randell
