Perhaps someone can confirm that Chopes still exists in Bideford , a fine establishment in my day selling ladies fashions , drapery , linen , etc etc , at the bottom of the High Street , with the ever posher Trapnells at the top of the High Street. This family of Walter`s is clearly the forerunner of the main `department store ` of the 1960s. What was she doing in Australia I wonder ? Thanks for this Bev , very interesting . I wonder if she was a Bible Christian emigrant with the James Way missionaries to Australia ? The Chopes were notable Methodists as I recall. Hmmmmm
