The British Seamen's Orphan Boys' Home at Brixham was supported by voluntary
contributions aided by Admiralty grants. It was administered by a committee
and in 1883 they agreed that the nomination of one orphan might be secured
throughout the western counties for every £25 collected annually. By 1888
the accommodation was found to be inadequate and a new wing was built funded
by donations totalling £1200 plus £200 paid by the Admiralty on the
condition that 20 boys were admitted at the rate of £25 per head per annum
plus 15 more at £24 each.. The new wing enabled 76 boys to be taken but this
was found to be too many and in 1906 the number was limited to 60, which
remained the capacity until closure.
If the records still exist they may be at the Brixham Heritage Museum if not
they are sure to know. Try

records been kept and who paid the costs of keeping such a place going? Was
it a church? funded thing, or did seaman pay some kind of 'insurance money'
into a kitty in case their wife/children were in need.
