I found this site very good recently when confronted with some
problem photo dates:

Apparently earlier photos were often recopied into the Carte
De Visite format which makes dating difficult although style of
clothes can help. And it is definitely worth getting your source
to scan the backs of the photos as well because Roger
Vaughan (who owns this site) seems to be able to date
photos almost as well from the back as from the front.
