The above lady is my husbands paternal grandmother. She married a Richard
Charles HARRIS (don't know when yet!). She has her surname stated on my
husbands fathers birth certificate and that is the only proof of surname.
I have seen her in the 1901 census living with five children & husband
and stating she was born in Honiton, Devon. Her age 37.
In the 1881 census I think I have her living with her father and siblings in
Bowhay, Exminster, her age 16 and place of birth Devon! no town or city.
Her death certificate states her age as 87 when she died in 1951. Up to
now her age and dates tie in.
I have spent ages on www.1837online.gov.uk and searched from Jan 1863-Dec
1867 and the only two Bessie's that have turned up are one born in Neath and
one born in Godstone. I applied for a marriage certificate on the strength
of Richard Harris in St. Thomas but the ONS said the fathers name wasn't the
same and the bride wasn't Bessie! So where should I go now? I tried to get
on the 1891 census for Exminster from the Devon list link I had & St. THOMAS
was there but no KENTON/EXMINSTER nor is there St. THOMAS-IDE.
Short of spending a lot more time and money on the 1837 for their marriage I
am stumped - can anyone offer me clues as to where to go to next?
Thank you all for any help you might offer.
