I think not 'remarried', but 'married after Richard's birth', and
probably not to his father. Here is the 1851 Census, and Ann is a
DOIDGE:

Ann DOIDGE Daur - 11 F Scholar Lifton-DEV
John DOIDGE Son - 10 M --- Lifton-DEV

Address: Lifton Down, Tavistock
Census Place: Lifton Tavistock, Devonshire
PRO Reference: HO/107/1884 Folio: 268 Page: 9 FHL Film: 0221033

Richard appears to be illegitimate, and this is consistent with the
description of Sophia as "Mother", rather than "Mother-in-Law" or
alternative, in 1881. ("Rel:" should be the relationship to the
"Head" of the household.)
Sorry about that! The father will be difficult/impossible to find.
