I thought listers might find the following quote from the Cruwys Morchard
Notebook of interest as a contribution to the current debate:

"That H. S. Cruwys was still being pestered with claimants in 1795 is shown
by a note that 'two strange women at the stable door belonging to Morchard
House demanded to see the Regr. Book of Burials'."

I've already come across some strange entries in the parish records for
various members of the Cruse/Cruwys family. I wonder how easy or difficult it
would have been in those days to tamper with the records to support an
inheritance claim?

(Brian, in case you're wondering, I've nearly finished the index - you should
have it in the next couple of weeks.)

Best wishes
