When I was married 2 Sept 1950 in the parish church of Ellacombe, Torquay,
the vicar had already entered all of the details in the marriage register
ahead of time ready for himself to date/sign and for us to sign and also the
two witnesses (our Dads). He had also prepared a copy certificate (all made
out in his own handwriting) and on that day he simply entered on it the
witness names plus the date 2 September 1950. This copy certificate was
given to us when we were in the vestry to sign the marriage register and it
is this copy certificate that we have used since then for passports or
whatever as proof of our marriage.
The ORIGINAL marriage register is either still with the church or has been
deposited to the Devon RO in Exeter. So --- if I want to see my own ORIGINAL
marriage entry with all the relevant ORIGINAL signatures then I will have to
either go to the church or to the Devon RO but after all of this time I
don't think I'll bother!!
Incidentally I have just looked at the marriage certificate of my parents
who were married 28 August 1922 at Newton Abbot Registry Offiice. All of the
handwriting is the same and it would appear to be that of the registrar.
There are no ORIGINAL signatures on this certificate either but it does
have a 2d stamp with intials scrawled over it - wonder when that law
changed?
