Lin, there was most certainly an orphanage called St Vincents in Torquay-
all gone now except the chapel. There is I believe a private hospital built
on the site. I believe it took over the site of what was a private school in
1889- it was run by nuns (catholic, I think.)

My web site at www.leaman.freeserve.co.uk contains information and photos
about Torquay and vicinity.
My index to 1861 census for St Mary Church, may now be found at
although I can still offer full transcriptions of any entry found there.
Torquay (ancient & modern) information or photos wanted.

Subject: Torquay orphanage
I am having a greedy request day but would be really appreciative of
any information regarding the orphanage in Torquay for Catholic
boys.I think it was called St Vincents. My (maternal) grandfather and
his brother were there in the late 1890s and my father was there in
the late 1920s and early thirties. Seems to have been a favourite
abode for my family.I know nothing regarding this orphanage except
for the horror stories of their treatment which obviously they did
not want to share to any great degree so information has died with
