Hi Martin and any other listers seeking ROWEs.
I am not going to repeat all that I have written to Chris on the subject of
WAY, WEBBER etc which I assume you will have seen as I will be sending it
out at the same time as this, but I see you have now listed yet
another'Templeton' name, ROWE. Awliscombe is quite a way from the Tiverton
area but not too far to be worth looking at possible connections even though
none of these names match with your James.
A William ROWE, 67 in 1881 was born in Templeton and farmed 42 acres at
Clogsmoor Farm. He was living there then with his daughter Caroline aged 40.
White's Directory of 1850 lists my gg-grandfather, George JACKSON who lived
at Cloggs Court at that time alongside William ROWE (squashed in on the same
line) as farmers. The two households were next door to each other too as far
as I can tell.
In 1881 there was also James ROWE, 37 b. Templeton and his wife Ellen 38,
b.Rackenford with 4 children born in Oakford at 'Lower N.Coomb Farm',
'farmer of 166 acres' but much of it rather inclining to the vertical I
think! (George wrote 'Combe' as he collected the rent from William BLAKE who
lived there earlier). The farm is still there and I have a photo of it.
One other ROWE I found was also born in Templeton, William E.H.ROWE,
wheelwright aged 25 with his wife Mary A.Rowe, 28, born Tavistock. They
lived at Brays Cot(tage), Butterleigh.
If you find any connection please do let me know, or ask if you want further
information (or have missed my other emails on the list)
Regards,
Barbara Lupton
