Hello List, Roger and Derek:
As that was the Royal Mint at Lydford, would it be a "royal" coat of arms
instead of a Lydford one?
Was Lydford connected with the Black Prince as was Launceston and Restormel
in Cornwall? Somebody was, but I can't remember who! And I can't seem to
find my Lydford information!!!
Years ago, the house to the left of the ruins (as you stand outside the old
pub beside the gaol, looking at the "castle") had an old arch in the
garden, part of the old ruins I would say. It seems to me there was
something in the top of the arch - a coat of arms maybe? Is that still
there? Is it the same thing?
I think Roger might be correct in advising you to check with the College of
Arms, but the last time I enquired (about a year ago) at their office, they
charged 400 pounds sterling for a search, and would not guarantee
results. Rather expensive, I'd say!!! Needless to say, they did not get
my business.
If I find my Lydford "stuff" I'll post any findings to this list. Another
place you could check which has just come to mind, is the GENUKI page for
Devon. Some of the towns, villages have bits of history there and you
might find what you need.
