Remember that Pengelly was also a teacher and ran a private school in
Torquay. There is an interesting book about his life written by his daughter
Hester Forbes-Julian- sorry can't remember the title but if anyone wants it,
I'll look it up next time I'm in the Library- he was, I believe born in East
Looe(?) His son in law Hector, Hester's husband, was killed in the Titanic
disaster. The Torquay Natural History Museum is closed at present while some
modernisation and upgrading is carried out thanks to a grant from the
National Lottery Heritage Fund.
I have also discovered, whilst doing some baptism indexing for Cockington
Parish , a family called PENGILLY.
Bapt Date Birth Date Name Surname Parents
14/12/1770 -----------------Elizabeth PENGILLY John & Elizabeth
16/10/1772 05/10/1772 William PENGILLY John & Elizabeth
04/03/1774 19/02/1774 Thomas PENGILLY John & Elizabeth

27/12/1779 03/12/1779 Henry PENGILLY John & Elizabeth

Hope this helps someone

I think you will find a lot of research has been done by Cornwall Family
History Society members on PENGELLY. [You may already be aware of this, for
which I apologise]. I would like to draw your attention to William Pengelly,
FRS 19th century explorer of Kents Cavern, Torquay where the first proof
was found that prehistoric man lived contemporaneously with animals now
extinct in Britain. More information could be found from the Torquay
Natural History Society, Babbacombe Rd, Torquay, of which William Pengelly
was a founder and where his excavated specimens and papers are housed.
