I like the idea that one of the children (eldest daughter maybe?) takes
her mother's maiden name as her middle name; eldest son takes father's
mother's maiden name, etc. etc. Until about 1900 in my family tree this
system has been invaluable in giving me clues about mothers' names..
Unfortunately it's got to the stage where I don't even have a middle
name, let alone a family one!
