Jo,
as you say, the certificate from the local registrars are usually
transcribed etc. but on the other hand, the photocopy you get from the
ONS/GRO is of a transcription anyway, as the origional registers are held by
the local registrars, with copies being sent to the ONS/GRO. There is
therefor just as much risk of error either way, but the local registrars
copy may well be more legible. Additionally if you do get a photocopy from
the local registrar for any marriage entries they may well show the real
signiture of your ancestors, as a number of the ones I have, do.
