Dear All,
I am looking for the birth of William Leatherby about 1821 in Devonport (he
was listed as aged 60 on the 1881 census) and emailed the West Devon Record
Office in Plymouth and they sent the following reply. I live in Bristol
about 120 miles from Plymouth. I hope the reply from them is of some help to
you. I have included their email address for you.
"Dear Mr Stone
Thank you for your enquiry.
In 1821, Devonport was covered by the parish of Stoke Damerel. It covered
the whole of the Devonport area until 1846, when it was split into a number
of smaller parishes. The parish records for Stoke Damerel are mostly on
microfiche and a copy is available at Plymouth Local Studies Library and
also here at the Record Office. The original registers are also held here.
If you would like to visit the office, you will need to telephone or e-mail
to book a place. Please try to give us as much notice as possible.
Yours sincerely
Rachel Broomfield for PWDRO"
Regards,
Bazza
