The Sokespiches lived on their farm of Marsh Barton, in Clyst St Goerge,
four miles SE of Exeter and were believed to have occupied the farm =
since
the Norman Conquest for aobut 600 years. Henry de la Pomerei granted to
William Sukespic of Exeter and to his heirs for homage and service, one
ferling of land in my manor of Clistwie together with the salt marsh =
which
extends from the cold spring ...... the rent was 4s a year in lieu of =
all
services..... this charter can be dated as not later than 1170-80 using =
the
names of witnesses. William had a son Robert whose wife was Isabella. =
They
had a son Jordan. It is suggested that one branch continued in Exeter
under the name of Spicer. Towards the end of the C18th there was a =
Robert
who had two sons - one died in Bombay in 1822 ( age 44) and the other =
in
1833 (age 65). There is no information about any daughters! If you =
would
like to send your postal address to my e-mail address I will send a =
photo
copy of the relevant pages if you would like that.
