Hi Trevor
We had quite a bit of correspondence on this subject a little while
ago on the list (browse the archives to view). I think the outcomes
were that (a) it is not illegal to marry your cousin in the UK . .. (I'm
afraid I can't remember if anyone said it ever has been) and (b) the
practice appears to have been very common among non-
conformists especially those who were rather well off. Reasons for
(b) were surmised as being either or both that their social circles
were restricted and/or that they wanted to keep the money in the
family.
Quite a few of us had similar examples of frequent cousin
marriages within families.
Hope this helps
Sandra
