Hi:

I have just made available in GENUKI/Devon a page describing the
present status of this project, and including a list of all the
completed 1891 census transcriptions that are already available in
GENUKI/Devon. This page is to be found at:

http://www.cs.ncl.ac.uk/genuki/DEV/censusproject.html

There are also links to it from near the top of the GENUKI/Devon
page, and under "Census" on this page.

To quote from the page: "Over fifty volunteers are already involved
in transcribing microfiche copies of the Devon census. . . Additional
volunteers are very welcome - a few more transcribers are needed, and
a larger number of checkers will shortly be required to help with the
upcoming checking task."

For details please see the page. And please think hard and long, if
you are not already involved in the project, as to whether and how
you could help. This mailing list was set up, in association with
GENUKI/Devon, not just for asking questions, but also in order to
promote Devon genealogy. (To misquote a famous US President, "Ask not
what DEVON-L and GENUKI can do for you, but what you can do for
DEVON-L and GENUKI"! :-)

There are lots of free genealogy resources on the net, but lots more
are needed. Any time you find yourself making use of such resources,
how about thinking how you could best thank the volunteers who
created these resources? I suggest the one very good way is to offer
your own volunteer effort, and in the case of Devon the two best
opportunities at the moment are the 1891 Census Transcription
Project, and the Book Indexing Project.

Cheers

Brian Randell
