Mrs. Black.

(I tried to write to you off list, but this message came back as
undeliverable)

I have seen your queries about Eveleigh on the Devon-L list. I am curious...
have you run across anything to indicate that perhaps the surname was
originally "Everleigh?" Do you think this might be possible?

I ask for two reasons: one, my surname, "Collins," was originally "Collyng"
or "Collyngs," was changed to "Collings," and now is "Collins;" two, the
earliest ancestor that I know anything about, Thomas Collyng, married an
Alice Everleigh somewhere in England about 1554. Alice was born about
1525. I'm pretty sure that they lived, and were perhaps born in Devon, as
their son, John Collings, was I believe born in Devon, attended Exeter, and
was a priest in the Church of England at Huish Parish (and possibly others).

Even if there is no connection between your Eveleighs and my Alice Everleigh,
it might be worth checking to see if the Eveleigh and Everleigh surnames are
related.

Best regards,

Craig Collins
