Dear Lesley, Lora, Clem, Julia and others who have been kind enough
to get me this far regarding Matthew's DOWN forbears.
Until recently we believed Thomas & Jane Down were from Devon,
but now learned, thanks to this list, that Thomas was born at Thrusleton
(or vari) which is in Devon ? (not yet found).
However son James was b.c1827 St.Climsland CON, while Eliza was
b.c.1836 at Tavistock DEV, where the family was residing during the 1851
census
(Thanks Lesley for your history pages, which could well have a link eventually
with the village of Thrusleton and Thomas as given name).
It is also true od course that the census date can be within 5 years which
would
allow for some difference in b.o.b. and census age (within reason)
However THOMAS DOWN'S wife JANE (nee ??? ) was born at St.Thomas Parish,
most probably Launceston, in Cornwall. Having studied all the info and the
atlas
this all seems to fit into place for our JANE b.1814 at Dock, Stoke Damerel
to Thomas (a sawyer) and Jane DOWN. Workers thronged to this region
during the building of the Plymouth docks.
I have been at this game for over 13 years and have digressed a good
bit to my other hobby of cross stitch. As I am in a new region for me,
I am wondering if someone could give me the clue to my next move.
I will visit the LDS and check out the I.G.I.
Many thanks for your kindness and interest...... This new information has
been very much appreciated with a name that is obviously well used in the
region.
We have just updated our home page too, after three years on the net.
Enjoy your day....
