North Devon Journal 1827-1920+, there is a carded surname index for the
period 1850-95, which would cover the time period you are interested in.
Both are held in the North Devon Records office, Tuly St, Barnstaple. There
was also a County & North Devon Advertiser 1832-48. North Devon Advertiser
1832-48. North Devon Herald 1870-1920+. Probably held at above record
office. The NDJ is still published weekly, and I think their web sight is on
something like Thisisnorthdevon.com. A search engine should be able to find
it.
I used the card index several times and it is very handy for locating
specific surnames, very quickly. For example I helped a Gentleman research
his Mock ancestors, went to the card index pulled out the bundle marked
Mock. One would say Mock Charles, Firearms offence, NDJ 1879/10/10 page 4
Para 3. Or Mock William, NDJ 1890/04/12 page 8 Para 2. Strawberries grown in
December. Not all of it, earth shattering news but it did put flesh onto the
bones. I'm not sure if the North Devon Record Office has a postal research
service, you should enquire.
P.S. For any Mock researchers reading this, the above references are
fictitious, as the research was done many years ago. But I do remember there
was at least twenty cards relating to Mock.
Hope this helps.
