Marriage licenses were granted by the Bishop of Exeter's surrogate, one
of the senior local clergy, to evade the necessity of calling banns on three
successive Sundays in the parishes of both parties. As a fee was
payable, at least in the past 200 years or so, it was sometimes a status
thing, the poor being unable to pay. Occasionally a member of the
parish, returning from afar for a brief visit, was forced to marry by
license. Not included above are licenses granted to marry during Lent, a
hangover from pre-Reformation days. A note on these was sometimes
recorded in parish registers but not always. Two examples on p.8 in 1639.

* A transcript of Exeter licenses by Mr. C.A.T. Fursdon, covering the
period 1734-1837 and indexed for surnames only, exists in the private
library of the Devon & Cornwall Record Society in the West Country
Room in the City library at Exeter. The original documents are still extant
in the Diocesan Archives in the County Record Office in South Street,
Exeter, but are tedious to examine, and are open to public view.
