Hello Fiona
I have no connection with your names, but I thought the task of tracing
them was interesting!
As you say, they're not common. I looked in the Devon FHS Indexes of
the 1851 Census. There seems to be a cluster of CHAM(M)INGS in
Okehampton and just north of there in Broadwoodkelly, Iddesleigh,
Inwardleigh, Jacobstowe, and Throwleigh. There's a CHAMING in Exbourne,
and a CHAMIN in Coldridge. So, are there any CHANTERs near there?
They're in Morchard Bishop, Chulmleigh, Bishop's Nympton, and a little
further east in Crediton and Sandford.
You could try these names on your Grandma and see if they stir any
memories!
