Can anybody tell me what the phrase"For sale by the CANDLE" means,
as it appears fairly frequently in diverse advertisements such as those in
the Sherborne and Yeovil Mercury of 1782.
Is it a form of auction?
My interest is that such an advert appeared in the above paper with
regard to a prize ship that had been captured by an ancestor.
