There seems to be a multiplicity, by which I mean a great variety, of
postings and opinions on this issue. Numbers of postings only reveals a
single aspect of the issue. In my opinion, here are other issues that need
to be discussed and resolved.

On the one hand there are people like myself who are lucky enough to have
permanent cable connections to the net for $35 US per month, constant
unlimited access, wave capability (400X average modem download capability)
and all sort of wonderful things that encourage behaviours that often annoy
or even enrage those people stuck with pay by the minute phone rates, party
lines and so forth.

(I likely needed to hear and take in some of the points raised by people
who really have to part with a lot of money to participate in these valuable
discussions and info swops. Yes, there is room for improvement at this PC,
thats for sure.)

On the other hand groups such as the rootsweb family seem to profit, in
family history terms, through the true and sometimes unbridled enthusiasm of
the subscribers. Some links, often achieved almost inadvertently, save
countless hours of difficult and often trying research at the treadmill of
paper record systems devised as state of the art in past and even present
history. A single posting can sometimes reveal an entire family history with
one mouse click.

Where is the balance between legitimate concerns of many subscribers and the
proven but erratic ability of the web to deliver in ways not possible until
recently? I don't know and suspect that few know either.

I suggest that this topic be dropped but not definitely not forgotten. We,
collectively, need to reach closure on this matter but are obviously not at
a point where this can reasonably be achieved. The real cost to some
subscribers, in my opinion, is too high.
