My interest in the Knight family of Newfoundland is due to the fact my
grandfather often spoke of his very favorite aunt, Sarah Amy Tozer Squarey
Knight, who was wed to Henry Knight. She taught my grandfather to play whist
at the ripe old age of 86. Sarah died in 1904. They , Henry and Sarah had
three children that I know of and I know lived in Monkstown in 1859 because
according to the Harbour Grace Standard and Conception Bay Advertiser which
my family, the Squareys published, the funeral for my great, great, great,
grandmother, Sarah Parsons Squarey was "from the home of her son-in-law
Henry Knight". I know only that her daughter Leah married George Evans at
Lamaline on July 26, 1865. Don't know if daughter Emma married, son Lemuel
could be the Lemuel Knight who wed Francis Mursell in 1854 and had 3
children???
I've always wondered who Sarah was named for as there seems to be
confusions over who her grandmother was. I believe it was Elizabeth Tozer
and that Amy Tozer was married to a Squarey a generation previous to
Elizabeth's back in Devon. I would love to know a bit more about this Henry
Knight even though my connection is so far removed. My grandfather once told
my father that he had a cousin living in Kansas city , Mo. in the 1940's but
we never knew who it was, I have pretty well accounted for all of my
grandfather's brothers who left Newfoundland long before he did and I don't
think it was any of their children so I wonder if it could have been a
Knight.
Although my mother was born there, I have not yet been to Newfoundland
but hope to go one day soon as I have been bitten by the "genealogy bug" and
hope to find some trace of her mother's side of the family, Captain John
Poole and George Buffett from the Channel and South Coast area of NF. I am
at least lucky in that the Squarey side is fairly well documented in Devon
and Newfoundland and that I am still in touch with the Devon Squarey,
although we are missing a few rather recent Squareys, in NF, even a
generation or so ago. It seems harder to find the more recent ancestors.
However I am very new at all this and will continue to dig.
