Dear James
My husband Glyn worked in the dockyard for 19 years (before we came to live on
the Isle of Wight) and I had my first job there too as a typist from
1979-1981. It was owned by the government in those days but has been
"privatised" now and is (I think) owned by a company called DML. It is very
much STILL there but I don't know if there are records kept of years gone by.
If I was you I would write a letter to: Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth, Devon
(with perhaps for the attention of the "Archives Officer" or something like
that).
As for its location well it is directly opposite Torpoint is about the best
description I can give. Torpoint is on the Cornwall bank of the river Tamar
(which divides Cornwall and Devon) and Devonport Dockyard is on the bank of
the river Tamar on the Devon side.
Best wishes
Liz Jenkin
