Hi, I'm Mary Ellis and I've been researching my husband's Ellis lines
in the Bideford area of Devon.
Specifically, I'm searching for the parentage and birth/baptismal
date of Robert Ellis who, in 1819 emigrated to Prince Edward Island,
Canada, where he married Hannah Darby. They had two sons in Canada
before returning to Bideford, where three more children were born to
them between 1830 and 1836. In 1840, Robert, Hannah and their three
surviving children returned permanently to PEI where Robert died in
1872 and Hannah died in 1891. Robert's estimated year of birth is
1797.
I have circumstantial evidence which points to him having been the
son of William and Mary (Galsworthy) Ellis, but a search of parish
registers in many towns/villages surrounding Bideford, has failed to
produce his baptismal record. It is suspected that William and Mary
may have migrated to London some time after 1787, where **a** William
and Mary Ellis had two sons, James and Robert at the British Lying-In
Hospital on Endell Street, Holborn, London, in 1795 and 1797
respectively. William of Bideford, per his will, was a
joiner/carpenter and the William in London was a carpenter. Mary's
age at the births of these two sons coincides with her estimated year
of baptism, 1757.
If anyone can point me to any leads which will help me solve this
25-year puzzle, I'd be truly appreciative.
Thanks and best to all,
Mary A. Ellis
