Hi all of our Germanic based surnames,
When Diana suggests something, it is always useful to look into, as are
the 3 resources she has identified (& I have now used), see below.
" There is a website:
http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/docs/refmaps.html,
click on Europe, a great prospective, and you can find map of Germany even
though contemporary, a help in the history!
Also, a basic is this:
http://userpage.chemie.fu-berlin.de/adressen/bl/bundeslaender.html
Also -consider joining a mail list of one of the provinces where your
ancestor was from. People on the lists there are most helpful...both
English and German speaking! A joy! Check out rootsweb mail-lists for
German provinces!
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/DEU/ "
Happy hunting...
