I just got the garden work finished before Christmas. I will plant the
apple cores in the spring in the round flower bed in the upper garden, I
covered things up well with a topping of asters and balsam, all the walks
were cleaned, pea and bean poles taken in, and the Madam has never said a
bad word about it.

I am happy that she now does not scold me specifically except one time 14
days ago. There are not many who are happy about coming in with her; Jepsen
himself generally slips away as soon as he can, when she starts; the
farmhands who are after all so big and strong are likewise as afraid of her
as are the girls.

----------------------------

Saa rendte hun over til
andres Stole uden Tilladelse.

It's also terrible with her when she becomes angry, then she can keep
nothing to herself. Yesterday an unfortunate incident occurred in the
Church: the seminary student, Bergstrøm, who reads to the children at
Gammelmølle, was in church, and he together with them had gone into our pews
- theirs are far down in the Church, ours are second from the front, now the
Madam, the boys and I were also in church, and there was little enough space
in the pew for us. So she ran over to our pew, drove Jens Berg and
Bartholin farther in - they had sat themselves outermost by the church
aisle; because they rarely come to Church and therefore did not know that
they should sit inside with the old people; I sat myself down correctly in
at the wall. But since there now was so little space she became annoyed,
probably didn't benefit particularly from the sermon, and gave Bergstrøm a
good piece of her mind, when we came from the church outside the church door
- all the church people heard it, he was astonished and did not know what he
should answer, she carried on so loudly, she thinks that people with his
education and upbringing should not go into others' pews without permission.

Manners here this year are absolutely just as good as they were last year. I
will not travel home until after New Year's Day; Christmas is better here.
