Hi Listmates...
As promised, here is the information that I have on the Sumpter/Crisp lines.
Bob Crisp: Note that I have additional children for William Patterson
Sumpter & Tyrissa Angeline Crisp Sumpter and this information was taken from the
Sumpter Family Bible in possession of Mary Alice Langley when she lived in
Atlanta, Ga. Mary Alice was a granddaughter of Edward Guinn Sumpter.
William and Elizabeth Iveson Sumpter lived in Albemarle Co., VA. William's
will was proven in Louisa Co., VA in 1752.
Children of William & Elizabeth...
Patience married Benjamin Franklin, James Suddereth
William born 1731 VA, died 1819 Burke Co., NC.
Thomas born 1734 VA died 1832 SC (this is the General Thomas Sumpter, known
as the Gamecock)
John born VA died before 1800.
Captain William Sumpter was married to Judith Randall in Albemarle Co., VA
and they had nine children. Documents show that Judith signed her dower
rights on several pieces of property in VA prior to moving to Burke Co., NC.
Youngest child was born prior to 1778. After Judith died, Capt. William Sumpter
married a second wife sometime after 1778. This wife was not Jane Crisp.
One of the sons of Capt. William and Judith was William, Jr. He married
first Margaret Hoskins and after her death, he married Jane Crisp. In the
Draper papers Jane states that she is the mother of Joel but she doesn't name any
other child.
Captain William Sumpter is supposed to have fathered another ten (10)
children by the second wife and to date there are only three that I have been able
to find that could be children of Capt. William and the second Mrs. Sumpter.
Jesse Sumpter b. 1788 married Elizabeth Mason (b. 1792) 30 Jan 1812, this is
from the marriage bond.
Isum married Susannah Rollings 1 February 1816 and this date too is from the
marriage bond.
Mary "Polly" Sumpter married Micajah Crisp - who this Crisp is, I have no
clue...but they had nine (9) children...

Steocah, Cherokee Co., NC. Tyrissa born Chatham, Haywood Co., NC. William died 18
January 1891 and is buried in Habersham Co., GA. Tyrissa died after 1891
Ivy Log, Union Co., GA. At the time of her death, Tyrissa was living with
daughter Nancy Idella Chapman. LDS notes state William Abraham but 1850 clearly
shows William P., his headstone shows William P. age 74, and the Family Bible
also states William Patterson Sumpter.
By the law of averages, the Patterson name wins...
Anna Elmina Sumpter born 1823 Burke Co., NC. married 1842 Steocah, Cherokee

Crisp and Alice Mila Barker Crisp.

The flowery names have always impressed me with this family...what happened
to the good old fashioned names - John, James, William.
John Wilburn Sumpter married 20 June 1867 Harriett Susan Arabella Cooper,
daughter of Thomas Jefferson Cooper and Frances Deaver. Harriett was born 26

many talents, seamstress, newspaper editor, parttime poet (I have a poem in

Paul Cooper born 16 Jul 1924 Petersburg, VA
Clarence Edward born 11 Jan 1928 Petersburg, VA
Fred Thomas Sumpter married Katherine Winnifred Bristow and they had four
children, the oldest son is my husband Thomas William...so the names do repeat
themselves and often it gets complicated as to which person belongs to which
generation.
Sorry this was so long, but to get it complete, these are some of the
descendants of William and Alice Mila Barker Crisp as well as the descendants of
Captain William Sumpter and Mrs. Sumpter II.
If anyone has anything else they would like to share, I'm still looking for
parents of Jane Crisp who married William Sumpter, Jr. and was the mother of
Joel Sumpter.
Have a theory, and anyone who would like can shot holes in it, but here
goes...
Jane Crisp states on the 1871 census that she is from SC and she is age 91
born approx. 1779
William Crisp states he is from Laurens Co., SC. but he is born approx. 1794
Possible that she is one of the oldest children in the family and William is
the youngest...that is only a fifteen (15) year span.
After she married William Sumpter, Jr. and especially after Joel was born
approx. 1812???Joel and William Patterson Sumpter spent time together growing up
and joined the militia together. If Jane was a sister of William Crisp, it
would make sense that William would come to visit the family and even move
into the area, and that William Patterson Sumpter would know Joel's cousins,
Tyrissa and Joel Crisp.
Possible that Micajah Crisp is also a brother of Jane and William, as he
married Polly Sumpter who was William Jr's 1/2 sister and possible that he too
came to visit with Jane and Wiliam, Jr.
Don't have a better theory, and it does make some sense to me when you look
at all of the Sumpter/Crisp marriages.
Take care and thanks for your patience in reading through all of this.
Bev Sumpter
