>> HEWITT SURNAME HISTORY
by Willie O'Kane

There have been Hewitts in Ireland for 800 years, but most in Ulster date from the seventeenth century Plantation. In Armagh most would be of English descent, where the name comes from the old English Hiewett, a pet form of Hugh. Similarly, in Scotland, it was Hew with the French diminutive -et.

The Poet John Hewitt (1907-87), although born in Belfast, was of Armagh stock. His poetry reflects a search for some synthesis of the conflicting allegiances and identities within the north of Ireland. His fascination with the landscape increased in proportion to his disillusionment with what he saw as the petty political wrangling that in Ulster took the place of normal discourse on art, literature or culture.

This Surname History is reproduced with the kind permission of Irish Roots Magazine in which it was first published as part of the feature article, Surnames of County Armagh, in Issue 4, 1997.
