Subject: [COVENTRY-L] need your gedcoms!

Hello everyone. I'm going to start adding people's lines to the
homepage, so I need your help. It takes a LOT of work on my part to do
it (my own lines took about 4 hours each on my tripod page..
http://members.tripod.com/~Kshai/genealogy.html) so here are some
options on how to send me your lines to put on the web with the smallest
amount of work for me....hopefully!
1. Go to the Bradford section and view the pages on Reverend Richard
Bradford.....this is the ideal format to use on the webpage. The
submitter put it all together and the only formatting I had to do was to
copy and paste to an html editor, and then add the graphics and
links....took about 10 minutes. This is the ideal way to submit your
line to me because I won't have to do much work. This WILL take a
little work on your part, but you could look at it like this....if you
take the extra time to do this, more people can see your line, hopefully
get more connections, AND you will have a webpage address to direct
others to for your particular line. Again, I prefer this format....oh,
and please don't do that
1.
..2.
....3. or anything, it makes it hard to read on a webpage when you have
more than 2 or 3 generations.
2. You can send me a gedcom of your file and I will convert it to html
(like my tripod page). There is a drawback to this though....actually a
couple. 1. This creates a lot of little files that waste server space
and 2. This is the format that takes about 4 hours because I have to
upload every single file to the server and I have to check each link to
make sure it works (if you go to my tripod page, you'll notice some
links don't work because there are 2 many files and the pages got lost
and mixed up). This is a really hard format to do, and because of that,
I have one important guidelines for this type...
Use only minimal names! This makes the file as small as possible and
uses less server space and less pages to upload. Only use Coventry
surnames and their spouse, but not their spouses info (Your email
address will be listed and they can contact you if this is their line).
I will tell you right now if you don't follow this, I won't put it up,
it's too much work....in other words follow it or don't bother. I don't
mean to sound harsh about this, but I am serious about it. As many of
you know I am a full time college student with 2 jobs and church 4 days
a week, my grades are slipping and I can't devote nearly as much time as
in the past to genealogy. Basically, I don't have time to fix your
mistakes...I would like to, I wish I could spend all day doing
genealogy! (and I have in the past...48 hours without sleep working on
my geocities page!) I love to do this and work on the homepages and
find ancestors and help others, but until this semester ends, I can't,
simple as that. Sorry to make this so long, but I just wanted to
explain my situation here and why I am so serious about it. Oh, on the
upside of sending gedcoms, rather than text format, I can make a master
file and combine all the gedcoms (that would have to wait til summer at
the soonest), that is why I am willing to spend the extra time...if you
follow my rule about that:). If you have a small file, only a few
names, that is fine, don't worry about it, by doing this, we can
hopefully add to it!:) (and with small files, try to use option 1,
thanks). Good luck everyone and I hope to get some files this week and
spend the weekend adding them:) I will let you know after I get a
couple up so check back:)....you know, hardly anyone posts to this list,
but maybe by doing this, you'll find connections with someone else on
the list!
