Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 16:36:16 -0000
I know most of the readers are from over the Big Pond !, but my 1st attempt at writing
about my city ( Coventry of course the home of the motor car and jet engine ).
"A Collection from Coventry's Past"
Freeman,Suitors & Precepts
Well over 9,000 people from the period 1833 to 1835.
>From the following sources;
COURT LEET SUITORS
Once a year a rate was collected from the householder in each Ward , lucky for us these
records are still
available and make a good record of the number of Head of house within each Ward.
This was NOT a census as we know it, but can be a aide to finding that "Missing
Person".
PRECEPTS
These are the old type "Warrants" for a persons arrest or sale of Chattels and sometimes
a list of the people who where the Jurors of the Trial .
These records have the information of just how much in debt they were, and to who they
owed the money !.
FREEMEN
These are from the 1834 Voters List .
DUPLICATION of ENTRIES
If the same surname and Christian name appear in more than on entry ;
Court Leet + Voter (Freeman) + Trade + Perseps ( BA/E/K/13/ files) .
This could mean either the same person entered 2, 3 or 4 times or different people with
the same names.
Further research is required to clarify any entry, the information within is meant as a
starting point to look
even deeper into a persons records, and to assist the researcher by listing some of many
records held in both
the Coventry Achieves and the Local Studies Section of Coventry Library.
WHY 1833/4
Civil registration started in England , so its the starting point for some and the end
for others .
The first FULL census was just over 7 years away, so most of people appearing within
this book should be in the 1841 census.
