Subject: [COVENTRY-L] suggestion on supporting rootsweb...please read
Date: Tue, 21 Apr 1998 22:15:22
Hello everyone, I have a suggestion/thought about supporting rootsweb. I
received a message earlier from someone who had sent that cookbook thing to
about a dozen lists and a couple more dozen people and in it, she said
something that made me think...If everyone who received it just donated
even $1, there would easily be a couple hundred total for rootsweb....what
do you say we try that?? I have 7 lists and 2 of them have over 100 people
on them (Black and Bradford) and the other lists combined would be more
than 100...I think if everyone dontated even just as little as $1, Rootsweb
would have at least $300 more to help pay their bills for electricity and
keeping the servers running, etc. They had a winter storm in February, I
believe it was, that knocked out the power to their server. They spent
money to repair the server and got generators just to keep all their lists
going (over 5,000!) which are no cost for any of you to join. If I
remember right, Brian Leverich, one of the master minds behind RootsWeb,
said that that storm cost them over $4,000! I just want people to know how
much Rootsweb has helped them and the genealogy community as a whole.
Without them, there would be no lists, no USGenWeb archives (i mentioned
before), and I know for the people like me who are addicted to genealogy,
we wouldn't be able to survive without them. They have helped all of us so
much, whether you realize it or not. If you would like to support them,
send them a check to:
Rootsweb Genealogical Data Cooperative
PO Box 6798
Frazier Park, CA 93222-6798
And make sure you put your email address on the memo line of the check so
Brian can send you a notice that they received it. Also, drop me a note
just telling me you contributed. You don't have to tell me how much or
anything, I'd just like to keep a tab of how many people have helped out:)
I know for me, I have only $20 to live off of for the next 4 weeks, but I
have already sent in my $1. Last note, if you would like to send that
money to go towards any list (particularly mine *hint* hehe), just give
them a little note saying something like "This is to go toward the XXXXXXX
list" or something like that. Thank you everyone for reading this. And
good luck in your ancestral hunting:)
