Hello Gail

Pigot's Directories were compiled for counties all over Britain - over a
number of years last century. They, and others like them [Slater's,
Kelly's to name a couple] give a description of the place concerned. They
then go on to list the people involved in commercial pursuits in that place
at that time. Kelly's Directories continue well into this century.

For example, from a Pigot's Derbyshire Directory of 1830, there are lists
for the following:

Nobility & Clergy
Academies & Schools [with head teachers]
Agents
Architects & Builders
Bakers
Basket Makers
Blacksmiths
Boot & Shoe Makers
Butchers
Coopers
Corn Millers
Framesmiths
Grocers & Drapers
Hair Dressers
Inns & Public Houses [with proprietors]
Joiners
Lace Manufacturers
Lime Burners
Maltsters
Nail Makers
Plumbers & Glaziers
Saddlers
Shopkeepers & Dealers in Sundries
Surgeons
Tailors
Tallow Chandlers
Turners in Wood
Wheelwrights
Woolstaplers
Miscellaneous

Carriers & Coaches - times and places of arrivals and departures and
routes.

Also gives the times and place of arrival of the post.

The above list can vary from time to time and from place to place, but this
should give you the general idea. These Trade Directories can be a very
valuable resource.

Sometimes you can also find street directories - with private residents
listed. The Godfrey OS Maps often include, on the back of the map,
excerpts from directories of the area concerned.

Best wishes,
