In her message of 6 Apr 2001, Bette <> mentioned Sherrod
Goode Colley, son of George Lewis Hamilton Colley (1818-1908). The
unusual name "Sherrod" twanged my memory.

I have an 1800 Census Index that lists Sherod Cauley in Edgefield
County, SC. Don't have his population schedule.

On microfilm in the White County (TN) Public Library, I found Sherrod G.
Colley paid taxes in District 1 (Sparta) in 1838, 1839, and 1840. In
1841, he was replaced on the tax rolls by George Colley. The tax lists
for 1842-1846 were not on the library's microfilm. There was no Colley
in 1847.

In the 1850 census of Sumner County, TN, on page 262 of Dean Porch's
1972 transcription, appears Sherod Colley, age 61, carpenter, born VA;
Nancy, age 46,
born NC; Isam, 22, carpenter; Zachariah, 21; James, 20; William, 17;
Lafayett, 16; and Eliza, 7.

After 1850 I loose him.

The Sumner County Sherod is too young to have been head of household in
1800, but he is old enough to be the father of Bette's George Colley. Am
I seeing three generations of Sherrod Colleys? Has anybody else found
him?

Bill Colley
