Hi Clayborn Listers,

The surname ‘Clayburn'as spelt, is the lead name in a section of the LDS
Church records. Although other spellings which could be considered
variants of the name, such as ‘Clebburn' have their own sections.

The ‘Clayburn' spelling appears to have originated in Yorkshire,
particularly in the Howden area of the East Riding of Yorkshire, from
which many family groups around Britain and the world emanate. If the
name was brought into the East Riding of Yorkshire from elsewhere, we
have yet to discover and prove the source. However, there is a strong
probability that the name in East Yorkshire arrived from East Anglia
further down the coast. The Norwich of Norfolk has a rich source of
early spelling variants and in the adjacent county of Suffolk, England,
forms of the name such as ‘Claybyn' can be found.

Persons far more experienced in this matter than myself, consider it
almost certain that many variants are the result of regional dialects.
In early days, names were spelt as they were interpreted by the scribe,
try saying ‘Clayburn' in as many dialects as you can and you will see
how easy it is for the name to be spelt differently. Also, when early
settlers went to North America, Australasia and other areas of the world
during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries , they took with them the
earlier spellings. Hence the ‘Claiborne' old Norfolk English and the
‘Cleborn' Irish variants found in the USA. Likewise the names ending
with or without an ‘e' result from old English writing of those
centuries.

The object of the ‘Clayburn One-Name Study' under the auspices of the
‘Guild of One-Name Studies' is to track down and record, every
occurrence of the ‘Clayburn' name and its variants with the aims of:

1. Encouraging research into the name and it variant forms.
2. Plotting the variations of each spelling and their
particular source.
3. Forming family groups from those tabulated records.
4. Filling in the background with interesting stories.
