DEA: AMOS 4 CHASE (Samuel 3, Ens. Moses 2, Aquila 1), born in
(now West Newbury), 9 Jan. 1718/9; died in Saco, Me., 2 Mar.
1818, aged 99y. 1m. 4d. He married (l) in 1740, SARAH COLE,
daughter of Samuel Cole of Saco. She died in Saco, 4 Feb. 1781,
aged ,56y. He married (2) DEBORAH who died in Saco,
29 Dec. 1793, aged 66y. He was deacon of the Congregational
Church of Saco, 1763. He removed from Newbury to Pepperell-
borough (now Saco) about 1753 and lived there the rest of his
life. He served on the Committee of Correspondence and Safety
for Saco in 1774 and 1776. (Ridlon's Saco Valley Settlements and
Families, 106). (Also Folsom's History of Saco and Biddeford,
281). On 17 July 1817, he rode three miles to take the hand of the
President of the United States, James Monroe, as he passed through
Saco from Portland, Me. His homestead in Saco was at the "Elms"
below the city proper, and two miles north of the ferry where he
Dea. Chase was a commanding figure, six feet in height, vigor-
ous and erect in old age, eloquent in conversation and pre-eminently
so in prayer. He is said to have worn his hair long "down over his
shoulders, white as snow, and dressed in old style breeches without
suspenders." He was indeed a patriarch. He was admitted to the
church in Biddeford, 10 June 1744.
Amos4 Chase of Saco, gentleman, made his will, 10 Apr. 1809,
was proved 25 Mar. 1818. He mentions his sons Samuel, Amos, Joseph,
John, Daniel and Abner Chase; Eliphalet Parker and Abraham Parker
children of his daughter Rebecca Parker; daughters Sarah Hardy and
Hannah Chase lately deceased; the heirs of his daughter Betsey
Robinson deceased; the heirs of his daughter Olive Nason deceased;
Mary Jones; Daniel Chase to be executor. (York Co. Probate, 27:257).
