It shouldn't be tricky at all. It should be very straight forward. You should enter the most distant known name from the direct paternal line of the man who gave the DNA sample. That's all. That's for the Y-DNA test. If the mtDNA test wasn't done then the Maternal ancestor can be left blank. If the mtDNA test was done then you want to enter the most distant known name along the direct maternal line of the man who gave the DNA sample.
I see several Kits on the "cookie cutter" chart that have surnames other than Carter. I wonder if these are cases where they know there was a name change and that their biological line is Carter? Or did they just not understand what information should be entered where? Or did they not understand what a Y-DNA Project was and "Joined" Carter in error?
