Hi Lana,
I am not sure we will ever know why Eli came to Canada but I do know for a fact that it is recorded during the burning of Danbury CT (Amer Rev.), some of the Dibbles were branded as Tories along with others and as such were harassed & hunted down forcing them to flee. Tory hunters would sniff out those who they suspected of being loyal to the crown and turn them over to the Patriots ( Whigs) who in turn committed horrible atrocities against them( public hangings, whippings,etc). One will find that many of our ancestors found their way to Canada because of the same reason ( ie: my one ancestor the well-to-do quaker Jospeh Allen of Dover Monmouth NJ was branded a Tory -the Patriots took everything he had such as his mills, land,etc and even went so far as to destroy his schooner so he couldn't escape/he did still manage to and fled to New Brunswick/so angry at what happened he went to NY and demanded to be made a Capt which the Tories did - he then gathered a band of men, too!
k up arms and fought the Patriots ( which I have always admired given that Quakers are pacifists and never bore arms. He must of been some POed!!) -of course to no avail as we all know-the USA demounced her British heritage and sent the Tories packing-and so Joseph and his family found themself in Canada starting all over again at the Bay of Quinte.
I have a strong suspicion it was this type of scenario that brought your Dibbles up to Canada.
