There is a recurring claim that the online SSDI is used for identity theft.
The theory is that those with fraudulent intent would use SSDI to capture a
social security number, especially those of children, and set up credit
accounts while representing that number as their own.
Many of us believe that the SSDI should be an effective tool to minimize
identity theft, rather than create it.
Any small (or large) business could enter a Social Security number into
SSDI -- if they found it listed they would immediately know that it could
not belong to a living person.
Apparently, many businesses failed to take this simple step and laid the
blame on the SSDI.
Now Ancestry has removed the SSDI from Rootsweb and GenealogyBank has
removed Social Security numbers from its version of the SSDI.
Other sources are taking similar actions. So far, that does not include
FamilySearch, although I also find theirs more difficult to use.
