Dan, Thanks for this post on the United Brethren and United Brethren in Christ. I have gotten several queries on "Brethren" in Missouri whose ancestors were supposedly Church of the Brethren, but were instead related to the United Brethren. I am particularly interested in your reference to the Brethren in Gentry County, MO. Your comment about the Brethren intermarrying with the United Brethren in Gentry County MO is interesting and could help explain what happened to these early Brethren who seemed to just disappear after they move into Gentry County. Perhaps this is part of the answer. Do you have more information on the Gentry County, MO Brethren? Also, where can I find information on the history of the United Brethren in Christ in Missouri? Would that information be with the Huntington College Library collection in Huntington, Indiana? Pat Seaver's list of members in the Zion Chapel United Brethren Church of Washington County, PA reads very closely to those Brethren names of families who did move west. Perhaps there are more ties here than has been realized earlier. Jane Davis.

> There was/is a remnant of the U Brethren who at the time of the EUB merger refused to go in with it. They remained apart from the merger and continued with the original United Brethren in Christ denomination under Bishop Milton Wright, the father of the Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilber.
> The United Brethren in Christ denomination was born not of the Methodist, Wesleyan tradition but actually from the work of a German Reformed minister and a Mennonite minister in Lancaster and York counties in PA in the late 1700's and actually the church was started in 1800
> Many "Brethren" names appear on the rolls of United Brethren Churches. When Brethren families lived in an area where there were no Brethren churches but the UB was available, that's where they went.
> In Gentry Co, MO, there was much intermarriage between the UBC church and the Brethren, with historically Brethren names found among both groups.
