Greetings--My mother, Julia Ann Flohr Metzger, remembered an Annual
Conference in Winona Lake during which a typhoid epidemic broke out. She
said that in later years, people would ask each other "are you a Winona Lake
survivor"? I'm guessing this would have been the 1925 conference; she would
have been about 7 years old then.

I attended the 1935 Conference - as a One Year Old (actually - nearer 8
months old)

Dad was preaching at the North Winona Church of the Brethren, we lived on
the home farm, over towards Nappanee. I was told that I kicked my feet in
Winona Lake during conference sessions. Winona Lake is the east "suburb"
of Warsaw IN.

The Church of the Brethren helped build the Billy Sunday Tabernacle there

in the Central region. But the "hotels" there became filled with retirees
- permanent residents - and there were no housing facilities for conference
attendees. Yes, 1935 was the last Conference at Winona Lake - I was

The Grace Brethren have centered there - their Grace College is there. (My
cousin attended there till he got hurt - living on the old home farm, over
near Nappanee.).
