Bill,
Although I cannot make a judgment through personal research, I have seen
evidence that the Burkhardts/Burketts came from Berks County. I am stuck in
my Shaffer research, but I strongly suspect they came from Berks County as
well, and this is how I have been running into the Burkett information.
There seems to be some parallel activity; my grandfather always said that
"John Shaffer (Sr.) fought in the Revolutionary War" and that he "was
Lutheran" and this also seems to be true of Jacob Burkett of Allegheny
Township. No, I don't think they were German Baptist early, as in Berks
County, but I do suspect influences in Somerset County. John Shaffer Jr.
married Nancy Bechtel, daughter of Jacob Bechtel of Stony Creek Township.
The Bechtels seem to have been Reformed or Lutheran in Somerset County, but
are descended from the Mennonite Bechtels of Washington County, Maryland,
and Berks County, Pennsylvania and some of their children became German
Baptist. John Shaffer Jr.'s sis!
ter, Elizabeth Shaffer married John Gans Jr. of a strong German Baptist
family, and another sister, Catherine Shaffer married Peter Trump in Stark
County, Ohio, likely a Lutheran, but with ties to Klingamans who were/became
German Baptist. Sisters Susanna Shaffer married David Blocher Hoff and
Lydia Shaffer married Jacob Blocher Hoff in Ohio, and they were German
Baptist. All very interesting, and had I more time I would work on figuring
out the connections between all these families.
