Merle,
An early welcome to Pittsburgh, were we take our professional sports seriously. You will be in world champion Steeler and Penguin country and will see black and gold everywhere. We also have a baseball team, but we don’t want to talk about them right now. :)
You will be speaking at our David L. Lawrence Convention Center. It is in the Golden Triangle, our Downtown area. The Convention Center is very unique in that is a green building (energy savings) and is the poster child of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania converting from the Steel Capital to high tech and green technology. It has been quite a transformation. You will see it unfold as you come through the tunnel from the airport if you are flying. If coming by train, the station is only two blocks from the Convention Center, but does not make the entrance that a drive from the airport does.
Not being a practicing Brethren, I was not aware the annual conference was going to be in our fair city. I would like to here your talk and learn more of the religion of my youth (I was baptized in the Pleasant Ridge COB, Needmore, Fulton County, Pennsylvania about 50 years ago. My 84 year old mother still attends regularly.) If I can get away, I will try to attend on Monday. I am the Executive Director of a small non-profit, Allegheny CleanWays. We are located on the South Side of Downtown Pittsburgh, along the Monongahela River. The Convention Center is on the Allegheny River. These two rivers meet at the Point and form the Ohio River, thus you will see the term “Three Rivers’ quite a lot.
Merle, if you have any questions, or need any assistance while in Pittsburgh, PLEASE feel free to call on me. My office number is 412.381.1301 and my home is 724.863.3930.
I came to Pittsburgh over 40 years ago to attend college and have pretty much stayed. We have left a few times, but keep coming back. As a transplant, I made an effort to learn as much about the area as possible; and descending from John Frazer, George Washington’s friend who was a guide on General Braddock’s ill fated visit here in 1755 and 3 years later was convinced by Washington to be the wagon master and Captain of the Militia with General John Forbes more successful venture, I know the history of the area well and love to share.
While here, you must see the city from Mt. Washington, the 400 foot bluff overlooking the city. We have two very unique Inclines that take passengers up and down the side of the hill. There are several good restaurants on top, but they are over priced and the view can be had for free. Again, contact me if you have any questions, concerns or need assistance.

Best regards,

Bob McKinley
