Jeanne,

I lived on a farm on Sugar Creek when I was a new-born child and now own
some of this very land in my older age. My gggrandfather, Isham Gibson, was
cofounder and first elder-in-charge of the Sugar Creek Congregation in 1830.
The Faragher book that you mention lists on page 70 the families from
Muhlenberg who were founding families of the Sugar Creek church. Greater
detail about these Brethren families can be found in my book, Sugar Creek
Brethren (2008), housed at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in
Springfield, Illinois. I think that you and I once agreed that your Elijah
West was probably not Brethren, but as I recall, he lived among the Brethren
and had a cemetery named after him that was very close to Elder John Dick's
farm where the earliest Sugar Creek Brethren were buried.

If you had family here, you might be interested in this book, Sugar Creek,
Life on the Illinois Prairie by John Faragher, Yale University Press.
There's not much to help with gen. research, but it gives an interesting
picture of pioneer life there. This was written as a history textbook.  I
found mentions of my Elijah West & his will, where he specifically makes
sure one son-in-law won't get his hands on anything!
