We know that Lawrence Younce of Wilkes County (1788-1791) lived in Lincoln
County prior to selling his land in Wilkes County to Samuel Lum and to John
Peary in 1795. In the deed of 14 Aug. 1795 "Between Laurence Younce,
Lincoln County, N. C. and Samuel Lum....150 acres Buffaloe Creek, North
Fork, New River.....land Younce sold John Peary..... Signed Laurence (X)
Younce. (Wilkes County, NC, Deeds Book B-1, Page 510) This deed states
unequivocally that Lawrence Younce was living in Lincoln County. Moreover
this was the same Lawrence Younce who received a grant of "300 acres,
Buffalo Creek, North Fork, New River" on 20 Dec. 1792. (Wilkes County, NC,
Deeds Book B-1, Page 316. In addition, this Lawrence Younce paid taxes on
this Wilkes County land from 1788 through 1792. He was a resident tax payer
of Wilkes from 1788 through 1791. He was a non-resident tax payer in Wilkes
in 1792. A William Younce, no land, two polls, turns up on the Wilkes
County tax list for 1796. All of these lists are for that part of Wilkes
that became Ashe in 1799.

Bottom Line: There is no question that Lawrence Younce of Wilkes County
also lived in Lincoln County. He lived in Wilkes County from 1788 through
1791 before locating in Lincoln County, but from what I can tell he did not
remain in Lincoln County for very long after his Wilkes County sales. I
don't know if he was the same fellow who lived in Lincoln County in 1787.

Subject: [BRE] Yonts family--Lawrence Younts

Dear List,

Please find below correspondence I have had with Jerry Yonts concerning this
Brethren family. It involves Lawrence Yonts and apparent son, William,
while in Lincoln County, NC. The crucial information involves the signing
of a deed by Lawrence Yonce with apparent wife Elizabeth in Lincoln County,
NC in 1787. I have been in correspondence with the list and individuals on
the list concerning this Lawrence Younce and his apparent sojourn in Lincoln
County, NC between his Uhwarrie (Randolph County, NC) residence and his
residence in Ashe County, NC. One of our observations was that Lawrence
(who married Catherine Fouts) had two residences in Lincoln Co and Ashe Co
at the same time.

Jerry suggests that this may in fact be a different Lawrence Younce in
Lincoln Co since his wife was Catherine Fouts. It is also very possible
that since his wife Catherine Fouts Younce had taken up with another man
(see the email below) that Lawrence also took up with another woman,
Elizabeth.

I am putting this on the list so that it might generate some discussion as
to the validity of any of the information. Your suggestions and input is
requested.

Thanks,

Robert Carpenter

Dear Robert:

I have been thinking about the deed information you have provided
showing Lawrence Yonce and wife Elizabeth. I am referencing Lawrence Younce
married Catherine Fouts 1770 Rowan Co. NC. To me this is a real puzzle. I
have read the references from John Davenport about Lawrence's failed
marriage with Catherine Fouts. I have read one researcher state Catherine
Fouts and William Trusty charged with adultery and bastardy in 1786 in
Randolph Co Nc . The deed you noted dated 1787 shows Lawrence's wife
Elizabeth. I think their son is probably William Yonts, Younts etc that
witnessed the deeds of purchase of slave by Lawrence Yonts witnessed by
William Younts.1794 LC North Carolina. I am thinking these may be two
different Lawrence Yonce, Younce , Yonts etc. The one that married Catherine
Fouts and the one with the wife Elizabeth.
I have no proof of this at all. I see in notes by others that Lawrence
Yonce apparently married off Lawrence Younce Jr. in Wilkes Co. (now ashe) I
wonder if apparently means there is a record or not? Do you know of any
verification of the Lawrence Jr. existing. Another researcher states
Larwrence Yonce and Lawrence Yonce Jr. moved to Muhlenberg Co. KY. This is
sort of west central ky. Its. all very confusing to me. If things work out
,I am going to try to sort through some of these deeds when I go to NC
archives. If I come up with anything substantial I will let you know.
Thanks
Jerry Yonts

to make a trip to nc archives in nc within the next year and will try to do
some research with data i have gathered.
Thank you so much

Dear Jerry,

I was summarizing the research I had done on this family
during their brief stay in Lincoln County.

I am going to paste some of my notes:

On August 30, 1785, Daniel Hudson sold 100 acres on both
sides of Indian Creek near the survey for Peter Myer to "Lawrence Yontz".
This sale was on the same date that Hudson sold land to Peter Myer and
"Lorans Yonts" witnessed that deed.[1] On October 25, 1787, "Lorance Yonts"
sold 200 acres on both sides of Indian Creek to Peter Tinker near Peter
Myer's line. Lorance and Elisabeth Yonts made marks as their signatures.[2]

As you see, Elizabeth signed as the wife of Lawrence Yonts
in 1787. I know that he is supposed to have had a different wife, Catherine
Fouts. Since they signed the deed together and since I have not found a
deed devising land to Elizabeth Yonts, it follows that Elizabeth was his
wife. I am hard pressed to discern a different conclusion unless some
additional documentation can be found to explain it. I also documented the
presence of Williams Yonts (variously spelled) during the same period. He
participated in a land settlement deed apparently just prior to his
departure:

On January 10, 1795, William "Yonts" witnessed a deed from
"Laurence Lenhard", the Dunker minister, to David Hager on Buffalo Creek.
On September 1 of the same year he witnessed a deed from Hannah Bentley and
Daniel Bentley to George Savage and Catharine Bollinger for land on both
sides of Indian Creek, which was land of Nicholas Welch .[1]

"William Yonce" applied for a marriage bond on
September 25, 1794 to marry "Margat Bently?". His witnessing the Bentley
deeds listed above involves a distribution of the lands of Thomas Bentley
deceased to his children who were then selling to others. It would appear
that Willian Yonce left Lincoln County after his witnessing of the 1795
Bentley deeds and may have moved westward with the Bentley family.[2]

Dear Mr. Carpenter,

I am researching William Yonce/Yonts and noted your
correspondence with Dwayne Wrightsman pasted below. I am descended from
William Yonce/ Yonts noted below in your e-mails to Mr. Wrightsman. I have
noted 1790 NC census with Lawrence as head of household. My question is how
did you determine William and Elizabeth were the ones in the home with
Lawrence since this record only records the head of household? I assume
Elizabeth to be his wife and William his son. I have a deed 1794, Lincoln co
nc showing purchase of a slave by Lawrence Yonts witnessed by William
Younts. William was born @ 1770-1775 in NC. William married Margaret Bentley
1794 in Lincoln Co. Nc. I have been told Lawrence married catherine fouts
but if so who was elizabeth and is William the son of Lawrence are my main
questions. It has been noted Lawrence had marital problems.
Thank you,

Jerry Yonts
